End of Summer Activities
Everyone seems to have their own type of summer ending activities. Some people blast down to the beach for one last weekend of fun and sun. Others have a big cook out with friends and family over. My family celebrates our end of summer and beginning of a new school year for the kids with a trip to the Maryland Renaissance Festival in Crownsville, Maryland. The first weekend is usually the last weekend of August and is also kids get in free weekend! That’s right, any child 15 and under is free with paid adult admission! That’s means more money in your pocket for mead and steak-on-a-stake!
A few years ago, my wife and I decided to take the kids. Unfortunately, my wife is allergic to straw and hay. She was miserable. But in her eyes, it was all worth it. The kids had a blast and wanted to go back the next day! Sadly, we told them we couldn’t because it was expensive and was over an hour drive away from where we live. So, last year, as summer approached, we looked up what events were going to be going on at the festival and saw that the kids were free on opening weekend. So we bought our tickets, and on opening day, when the King and Queen arrived, my daughter was standing right there with her eyes wide in wonder and amazement. My wife took a bunch of allergy medicine and we spent the next few hours exploring the festival,
Again, this year, my kids were asking me from the moment they left school on the last day. I of course told them, “Yes, we are going to the festival this year.” They were thrilled and couldn’t wait. This has now become a yearly happening for my family. Each year in the foreseeable future, we will be hopping in the car and headed to Crownsville, Maryland for a day at the Renaissance Festival. But it is more than that, it is more than just having fun at the end of summer. We are creating memories with our kids. THAT is the biggest thing. Spending time with each other and creating memories. It doesn’t matter if you are at the beach, a cook out, or dancing like a fool at the renaissance festival. What matters is that you are together and enjoying the time.
So, what is your end of summer activity? What is it you like to do to celebrate the end of summer? If you don’t have one, why not make one?
