What is your motivation for traveling?
The first time any of my friends and family asked me why I wanted to travel, I was unsure how to answer them. The only thing I could come up with was, “Why not?” It wasn’t a great answer, but it was all I had. That question got me to thinking about what was motivating me to travel. Did I want to just get away from the daily routine? Or was there something more to it?
But, “Why not” is actually a good place to start. Why do any of us need a specific reason to travel? Ask yourself, have you ever seen a picture of a place you have never been to and wonder what it was really like? The place does not have to be some far off, exotic destination. It could be a small town or park close to your home. Why wonder what it is really like instead of finding out?
The question my family and friends wanted to find the answer to was, “What is my motivation?” Because that is what it ultimately comes down to. The list of motivations to travel is endless. Perhaps you wish to experience foreign cultures, see the great wonders of the world, or maybe learn more about your ancestry. Our motivations can also come from external sources such as movies or music. What about that song that spoke of a city and it’s beauty. Or the location of a scene in a movie that sparks your curiousity? For me, it was the Indiana Jones movies(the original three) and the original Star Wars Trilogy.
Growing up, I used to lay on the floor in my bedroom and watch those movies on my little 8 inch black and white tv. I would lay there in complete awe of the characters and their adventures in places I had never been. I dreamt of following Indiana Jones on his adventures during the World War 2 era. Even exploring the forests on the Forested Moon of Endor. I wanted to go places I had not seen and have adventures of my own.
These are just a few of the many motivations to travel. Whatever your motivation for traveling, let it guide you on your travels. The trick is using your motivation to help you follow your dreams of travel. Don’t just sit there and dream about traveling, get out there and make your dreams a reality.
